The first settlement in what is now Bullhead City was made by Mormon settlers on the east side of the Saguaro River in 1868. The city was named for General George Armstrong Custer during his Indian Wars campaign against the Cheyenne and Arapaho. The city post office opened in 1879 and continued to be called "Custer City" until 1912. Bullhead City was incorporated as a municipality on March 6, 1907. On November 16, 1912, it became a city charter with a population of 20,000 residents. On July 1, 1916 it lost its charter to become an unincorporated community again with a population of 5 citizens only due to lack of money from Taxes levied on Richland Ranch which was within the boundaries at that time. In 1924 local officials voted not to annex Richland Ranch which would have increased its population by 10%. The annexation did not take place because Richland Ranch had no land title within Bullhead City limits! On October 17th 1958 Bullhead City hosted America's Cup race between Britain and America (the first ever global yacht race). As part of this event bullheads were allowed onto all participating yachts without having their boats boarded or searched! This unique event helped increase tourism around town and led to more business for Bullhead City businesses over the years! Today Bullhead City has some great attractions such as: -The Mayo Museum of Art - home to some world class art including paintings by Vincent van Gogh and Edward Munch - 19th century mining ruins located off US 95 near milepost 21st which include an open-air museum containing artifacts from both gold rushes and World War I - also contains an active blacksmith shop dating back to 1886 - features free admission Saturdays from 9am-5pm .
