According to the Buckeye Telescope Museum, the first scopes were designed and built in 1894 by George Ellery Hale. Buckeye is a small town in the Apache County, Arizona area. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is located on the south side of Buckeye Lake and is bordered by Apache County to the east and west, and Pinal County to the north. The name "Buckeye" comes from a Native American word meaning "place where trees grow." The first settler in what is now Buckeye was George Witherspoon who arrived in 1872. He built a cabin near present-day Buckeye Lake. Other early settlers included John Hinchey (1873), James Ahern (1875), Elias Howe (1876), Isaac Howes (1877), Daniel O'Brien (1879) and Michael Ryan raided for food near present-day Buckeye Dam in 1881. In 1886, John Fenton arrived from Kentucky with his family and platted what became Buckeye Township. He initial named it after his home state of Kentucky but later changed it to Apache County because he felt that county should be divided evenly between himself and his wife's father-in-law Charles Goodnight. In 1912, Jens Hansen started a post office at Buckeye which served until 1959 when it was moved to nearby Organ Pipe Cactus National Monument. The first house in what is now Buckeye was built by Dolphus Hayward in 1915; it still stands today as one of the few remaining original residences from that time period in the townsite. The economy of central Phoenix gradually shifted away from agriculture during World War II as industry supplanted traditional farming activities; however, some businesses continued to operate around downtown while others closed or moved away during this time frame including Post Office Furniture Store which operated until 1984; Big Daddy's Barbecue which opened for business on October 10th of that year; Fish Unlimited which opened on November 15th 1990; Donut Emporiums which were open until 1978 when they closed due to railroad tracks running through their lot adjacent to Broadway Avenue; Two Dollar Bill Pinball & gaming shop opened December 3rd 1992 - this arcade remains operational today as part of GameStop’s Scottsdale location On January 1st 2005, nearly all businesses within blocks radius surrounding downtown closed due to an electrical fire that destroyed much of what remained downtown following an Amtrak derailment just off McClintock Road bypassing town limits In late 2006 work began on converting Historic Fourth Street into what would become known as "the block." This project will improve pedestrian flow along Fourth Street while also creating new businesses and housing units along its entirety including several high end restaurants/bars/casinos such as Hard Rock Cafe & Gables Casino Resort, Wynn Las Vegas & Bellagio Hotel Resorts casino properties across 4th street corridor from IMAX theater complex up Castro Street all culminating with completion by spring 2009 On May 17th 2007 OSHA fined two construction companies $5 million for repeated violations related to safety hazards during building projects completed inside Indian Wells Municipal Utility District boundaries
