The Buckeye Rifle Club was founded in 1892. The first firearm used in a militia drill at the club was an old muzzleloader. In 1903, the rifle club equipped themselves with rifles from the local armory and began practicing at their clubhouse. In 1912, the Buckeye Rifle Club became affiliated with the Arizona State Rifle Association and soon outgrew its home clubhouse. A new location was leased on East Dysart Road in 1916 and continued to function as a rifle club until it burned down in 1978. In 1919, local residents approached the NRA about forming a deer hunt preserve near Buckeye which would become known as Bisbee National Wildlife Refuge. The NRA agreed to help fund this project and by 1922, all of Bisbee had been stocked with rifles for citizens to use in hunting deer. In 1938, members of the Buckeye Rifle Club formed the Arizona Gunsmiths Association under the leadership of Harry Sutherfield and others to provide support for firearmsmiths throughout Arizona. The association remains active today and offers member dues along with access to educational programming about firearms history and technology

He was a rancher and Senator from the state of Ohio who became famous for his role in helping to create the United States Constitution. John C. Buckeye also played an important role in Arizona's early history. In 1867, he donated land to make up what is now called Buckeye Flat, which was part of what is now known as Phoenix. Buckeye Flat later became a village and was home to some of Arizona's first farmers and entrepreneurs. Buckeye also had an important impact on the state of Arizona during its early years. In 1870, he donated land to become part of what is now Phoenix and helped create the city that still stands today – one of the most cosmopolitan cities in North America!
The Buckeye, Arizona area was first populated by the Pima and Maricopa Indian Nations. The area was part of the Tonto National Forest from 1879 to 1912. In 1912, the forest was redesignated as the Buckeye Ranger District. On June 14, 1915, a fire began in the Buckeye Ranger District and quickly spread to other districts in the ranger district. By September 15, 1915, over 100 firefighters were fighting the blaze. With heavy rains and high winds creating dangerous conditions, only 5 percent of the total fire had been contained when reinforcements arrived on October 3rd. The remaining firefighters burned for days until finally putting out the final fire on October 10th.
