Buckeye, Arizona is a small town located in Pima County, Arizona. The population of Buckeye was 1,853 at the 2000 census. The name Buckeye comes from the Apache word "buca," meaning "a small tree." The first settler in what is now Buckeye was John Smedley who arrived in 1847. He named his land the Smedley Ranch which he donated to the Pima County Agricultural Society. In 1865 J.B. Cummins and Wm Henson bought some of Smedley's land and developed it into what is now Buckeye. Cummins and Henson were also instrumental in developing White Sands Missile Range near Buckeye. Today, much of what makes up Buckeye has been replaced by development - but there are still a few reminders of its past: The Smedley Chapel, built in 1912; the McClintock Store; and the Old Post Office which was built in 1916 on Main Street. In 1952, when Phoenix became an incorporated city, civic boosters recommended that Pima County be divided into two counties - one for Phoenix and one for Tucson - so that both cities would have more access to services available within their respective boundaries. As a result of this recommendation, part of Main Street in downtown Tucson became known as "Civic Center Drive" after the county seat for Pima County (now Mesa). When Phoenix annexed Tempe on February 14, 1987 it added an additional 2 square miles (5 km2) to its boundaries making Buckeye all but surrounded by Phoenix on three sides! Buckeye is a town in Apache County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The name Buckeye comes from the nearby hills that have birches (a type of tree) on them. The first settler in what is now Buckeye was James Bowie in 1868. He and his family built a cabin on a hill overlooking the creek near present-day Buckeye Elementary School. In 1871, John Wesley Powell named it after General George Armstrong Custer who had died two years earlier while fighting for the Union during the American Civil War. In 1898, Mormon missionaries arrived in Apache County and started to preach a gospel of salvation through Jesus Christ to Native Americans living around Tucson and Buckeye Valley. In 1902, they founded The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints (LDS Church). When World War I began, many people left Tucson for military service because there were no jobs available; however, when hostilities ended in 1918 there were more jobs than ever before due to new technology investments by businesses such as Ford Motors and GEICO which created new industries throughout Arizona including agriculture and manufacturing which led to increased job opportunities for local farmers and workers alike as well as increased housing prices which supported small businesses throughout Arizona’s agricultural highlands
The Buckeye Dam, located in Buckeye, Arizona was built in 1928 and it became operational in 1930. The dam is a concrete gravity dam with a height of 248 feet and it has a capacity of 4,000 acre-feet.
