Buckeye, Arizona is a small town located in Pima County, Arizona. The population was 805 at the 2000 census. The name Buckeye is derived from the Apache word "buca" meaning "buffalo." The first gun barrels made in Buckeye were fabricated by John Sprague and Company of Prescott in 1883. In 1901, Sylvanus Hargrave started making gun barrels here. By 1909, all barrel factories in Buckeye had been closed due to the prohibition of alcohol in Arizona. However, some barrel factories reopened after repeal of Prohibition. In 1919-1920, George Wickersham and his son formed Wickersham & Hargrave Barrels to continue manufacturing gun barrels here. In 1928-1929, Don Freeman began making rifle barrels here and continued production until 1990 when it was bought by Winchester Repeating Arms Corporation (WRA). From 1990-2000, the production of firearms ceased at WRA's Buckeye facility due to plant closure plans announced by then-President Bill Clinton during his tenure as President of the United States. This lack of firearm production has left local businesses such as Master Gunsmithing (MG) with an opportunity to offer their services forgun repairs and barrel replacements/updates throughout the year. The history of firearms begins with muskets which were used for hunting game such as deer and buffalo on Indian reservations duringprevious centuries. Firearms originated with cannons which could be used against enemy soldiers or warships afloat on open ocean voyages duringthe American Revolution (1775-1781). Captain James Cook discovered new lands around Australia while exploring HMS Endeavour on July 24th 1770 while sailing near Perth Harbor off present day Tasmania . On October 14th 1788 Commodore John Hawkins sailed into Botany Bay off New South Wales Airing guns from a boat early one morning enabled him to take possession of Port Jackson without any resistance from locals who thought he was lost! He named this place Sydney because there was no Mount Gravatt among those living near Sydney Cove where he anchored his ship; probably because Mount Gravatt looked like a “gravy train” coming down the bay! A cannonball killed many people aboard HMS Erebus when she caught fire on March 29th 1824 On November 8th 1800 British forces destroyed Fort Moultrie within days after launching their assault against Mexico City In 1861 Ulysses S Grant ordered General David Hunter not surrender at Appomattox Court House after learning that Confederate General Robert Ewell had surrendered there two weeks earlier While retreating across North Carolina I encountered mounted men known as CSA cavalry who told me they were Army troops! I asked what infantry they belonged too and they said You are looking at a Yankee – Drop your sword before you fall! Aftermath photos show few if any Union troops remaining... [I]t must have been about 7600 men - more than half horsemen only!! It is interesting that though we may have fought side by side for years – we never really knew each other well enough for them to trust us… So much for being Americans! By doing this, these smiths were able to determine how durable each individual part should be before manufacturing them – thus ensuring high quality products throughout their life span!
