The first white person to set foot in what is now Buckeye was John Wesley Powell on July 16th 1887 while he was exploring the Mormon Trail through Arizona. A post office called Buckeye was established in 1907. 1st Lt George Armstrong Custer's older brother had been Killed by Indians near Buckeye on November 25th, 1874 and his younger brother Charles Ewing succeeded him as Postmaster General for Pima County Territory (later Arizona). Charles Ewing also became Sheriff of Pima County from 1912-1914. In 1916 Peter Kenedy organized a band of Apache Scouts who were known as "the Wildcats". From 1916 until he retired in 1945 they operated under his command while being used by Western Union as secret courier service between Phoenix and San Francisco during World War I and World War II
