The name of the town is derived from two words: "avondale" meaning "forested hillock" and "dale" meaning " valley." It is located about 15 miles east of downtown Phoenix. The first people to live in Avondale were Spanish settlers who arrived in 1827. In 1912, the townsite was acquired by the city of Phoenix. A post office was established in 1916 and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1978. Avondale has a variety of businesses including restaurants, gas stations, health food stores and more. There are also several golf courses within walking distance of the town center.

In 1972, culver drive became an all-girls high school and remained that way until 2004 when boys were added as a single gender option. TodayAvondale is home to both Culver Drive High School and Apache Hills Middle School which opened their doors in 2006. Both schools are located on approximately one acre of property within walking distance of each other and offer programs that meet the needs of both boys and girls alike. For example, Apache Hills Middle School offers classes for young adults who have completed ninth through twelfth grades as well as those who want to continue their education after completing high school; while Culver Drive High School provides instruction for students from Pre-Kindergarten through eighth grade as well as middle/junior high students who have not yet completed high school but desire an opportunity to participate in college prep courses or attend college full time based upon their academic ability and future plans. This community’s rich history begins with Spanish settlers who arrived in 1769 along what is today streets such as 16th Street (now called Indian Wells Road), 18th Street (now known as Camelback Road), 22nd Avenue (now University Boulevard) and 24th Ave (now known as Vineyards Parkway). After being successful at farming ad ranching during its early years, the area around Avondale changed hands several times before becoming part of Yuma County under Mexican American rule from 1853 until 1912 when it was sold to American citizens via homesteading efforts led by Major General Fredrick Kittley Sr., namesake for Kittley Peak near Flagstaff across from where he lived with his family since childhood outside Prescott Valley on Snowmass Mesa east of Phoenix proper.
