Avondale is a small town in central Arizona, United States. It was founded in 1907 by the founders of the University of Phoenix. The population was 2,500 at the 2010 census. Avondale is one of two towns in Apache County that are still governed by an elected sheriff and municipal council. The other is Window Rock. The town is located on the banks of the Verde River, east of Phoenix and west of Tucson. It lies along State Route 86 and has a ZIP code 85734. The first European to visit Avondale was Francisco Xavier de la Garza, who discovered it in 1821 while traveling through Apache Country as part of his exploration into what would become Arizona Territory. La Garza named it Villa Rica after Queen Victoria's home country Argentina, which he had seen while travelling down the Andes in 1819-20. La Garza's party included Manuel Marquis y Arregui, who also explored nearby Cochise National Park during this time; they camped near what would later be called Old Town and reached their destination on July 7, 1821 when they discovered a well-preserved cliff dwellings dating back 4,000 years! In 1907 University Of Phoenix founder Jameson Coolidge donated land to make way for its main campus on Monument Street overlooking downtown Avondale. Coolidge believed that "the education given here will vindicate our Alma Mater" and so donated $5 million towards construction which began in 1909 with 1 million dollars from Houghton Mifflin publisher Harriman Smithson III., making it one of America's largest philanthropic donations ever made at that time (it now totals over $200 million). The original Main Campus building still stands today (along with many other buildings on campus), housing much of the school's academic programming including graduate level courses as well as offices for various student organizations such as Alpha Phi Omega fraternity and women's club.
