Avondale is a small town in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 602 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tucson metropolitan area. The town was founded by Mormons in 1868 as an agricultural community named Utah City on the edge of what is now Avondale. In 1870, Mormon settlers founded a new settlement called Cedar City to serve as a wintering ground for their brethren in Provo, Utah. When that community burned down in 1876, the Mormons abandoned Cedar City and moved their families to Avondale instead. In 1886, local store owner John Tatum donated land to build a school and post office there. The first school classes were held on October 15, 1886. The post office was established on November 16th of that year and remained open until it closed in 1912 due to lack of mail service from Phoenix. Avondale's growth began slowly but steadily over the next few decades; during World War II it became an important manufacturing center for aluminum products because of its strategic location near two major military airfields (McChord Field and Yuma Airfield). After the war ended, Avondale experienced rapid growth thanks to many new businesses opening up including several medical equipment companies and computer manufacturers such as Gates Associates and Compaq Computer Corporation which relocated from Mesa or Scotts Valley after purchasing land here from farmer George Wyleighs in 1970. Despite this rapid development, however,Avondale always struggled economically with poverty rates among its residents consistently above 60%. The townsfolk fought back through various initiatives such as launching successful campaigns for tax increases and investments into education and infrastructure; however these efforts typically failed to close the gap between average incomes within the town compared to surrounding areas over time which has continue unabated well into today's era despite struggles with crime rates etc..
