The community is located on the east side of Avondale Mountain between Phoenix and Scottsdale. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The first European to visit what is now Avondale was José Mesa in 1867. He named it after Mount Ararat, in Turkey, which he had seen from his journey across that country. Mesa's group of Mormon pioneers who arrived in 1868 also named their new settlement after Mount Ararat—Avondale (Avenida) Peak they called "the peak." The first post office at Avondale was established on November 15th, 1886 by Leland Stanford Sr., president of Stanford University and one of the founders of Arizona Territory. The name change came about because the original avon (a Native American word meaning “valley” or “plain”) leading to the town was so wide it took two days for wagon trains to travel through it and no one could get an accurate location for a post office because there were no hills or trees then! In 1912, A&P grocery store owner Orville Wright started building his home on Fourth Street near Gate Drive. His garage became an outpost for local car manufacturers like Ford and Chrysler before he opened his doors as a movie theater in 1927 with current marquee still visible today next to I-5 at Exit 333B northbound/Exit 128 southbound). Wright used his home as a testing ground for many early airplane designs including those designed by USAAF Colonel James Aileron during World War II when he lived adjacent to Wright's house until 1942; later that year Groom Lake Airport was Opened south of highway 95 overlooking AVONDALE Mountain range

The name Avondale comes from Spanish meaning "a place where olive trees grow." The first settlers in this area were Mexican Americans who arrived in 1875. In 1912, the town was founded by J.P. Morgan and his business partner Edward Harkness as a seasonal resort on the Gila River. In 1932, Avondale became a permanent community with its own school district and government. In 1951, Avondale hosted the United States Olympic trials for track and field athletes which led to the construction of nearby Olympic Village in 1952-1953 which housed all of America's track and field athletes until their move to London two years later. In 1983, Avondale voters passed an ordinance allowing beer sales within city limits starting July 1st of that year becoming one of just six cities in Arizona to allow such sales without a vote by residents or City Council approval (the other five being Phoenix, Tucson, Kingman, Tempe and Peoria). The ban on alcohol sales had been lifted by then-Mayor Jack Conway after heavy lobbying from local breweries which saw it as an opportunity to expand their reach into what was then rural Pima County beyond just southern Apache Junction Road south of I-10 east of central Phoenix - something they believed would be done through annexation into neighboring towns such as Chandler or Scottsdale but never happened due to opposition from those towns' mayors/councils/district attorneys whose budgets were already burdened by more pressing issues such as infrastructure repairs following 9/11/2001 attacks that destroyed many homes and businesses within Arroyo Seco boundaries).
