The current post office building was built in 1912 and replaced an earlier structure that burned down in 1910. In 1920, the city annexed the village of Nogales to its boundaries. In 1940, Avondale became a full-time municipality under statehood and amended its charter to allow for more local governments within its borders than had been previously allowed. The current mayor is Donny Tatum with a four-year term beginning on January 1 of each year; City Council members are elected staggered terms with two seats coming up for election every two years. Avondale has many cultural attractions including the Phoenix Art Museum (founded in 1907), Giffords Park (opened in 1937), the John F Kennedy Presidential Library & Museum (opened in 1987), and numerous restaurants and businesses related to the nearby Bedrock Mining Company area which provides much of the town's economic vitality today.

Settled by Mexicans in the late 1840s and early 1850s, Avondale's economy has been based on cattle, grain, and citrus production since the early 19th century. The nearby towns of Globe and Phoenix were nuclei of this agricultural district which included many small villages. The town name may be derived from Spanish avódalos (a type of grape), meaning "fruit trees". A post office called Avondale was established in 1868, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1909. Avondale had a depot on the Santa Fe Railway line; however, it closed circa 1915 because of lack of passengers. A branch line operated from Globe to Prescott via Ansonia before being abandoned in 1922. Today only traces remain of these lines that once connected two adjacent communities. In 1936, avondalese founded their own radio station KFUV-FM; however it would not be operational for more than a year before being taken over by the Phoenix Broadcasting System affiliate KOIN-TV . In 1959 KFUV changed its call letters to KTAR-TV ; however they would only stay with those initials for three years before changing them back to KFUV-FM . In 1984 KFUV became an independent television station with call letters AZTK-. It would operate as an ABC affiliate until 2009 when its affiliation switched to Fox News Channel . In 2013 KRQE purchased KTAR's analog channel 12 and transitioned all its programming onto that channel effective September 1st
Avondale is a city in the Apache Nation reservation in central Arizona. It was founded on July 8, 1912 by Colonel George W. Armstrong and his group of cavalry officers as a trading post for themselves and their horses. The post became an important military base during World War I, and later served as the primary depot for supplies and refugees coming through the area after the Phoenix Terminal Railway Disaster. In the 1920s, Avondale was home to one of the largest concentration camps in Arizona, known as "The Ghetto". After World War II it grew into a well-to-do suburb of Phoenix with many large homes and gardens.
