Avondale, Arizona is a town in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tucson Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first Europeans to see Avondale were Spanish explorers who sailed up the Colorado River in 1540 and 1541. The name "Avondale" means "place where wood grows." It may have been named for Scottish explorer David Livingstone who found a watering hole there in 1827 while on his second journey through central Arizona. The town was founded by Mormon pioneers in 1868 when they migrated from Utah to Pima County. At that time it was considered one of the most remote places in Arizona because it had no railroad or telephone service. In 1902, Avondale became an incorporated town when all of Pima County became organized into municipalities. In 1916, the Phoenix Electric Light Company built a small hydroelectric plant on White Sands Lake near present-day Avondale to provide power for city lights and other needs during World War I. This project led to increased development around White Sands Lake and eventually attracted businesses such as auto dealerships, hotels, casinos and grocery stores which mushroomed over time as more people moved into this area. In 1947, following passage of the Social Security Act Amendments of 1935 (SSA), Avondale began receiving social security payments from its citizens rather than from government coffers like other towns in Pima County at that time. This change helped spur economic development within the community as well as new housing developments being constructed throughout what is now downtown Avondale thanks to private investment and patronage from local politicians such as Governor Frank Stanton whom also resided in town at the time; Stanton later served as Mayor of Tucson before becoming U S Senator representing Arizona’s First District after retiring from politics in 2013). On October 2nd 1944 avONDALE BEGAN TO RECEIVE THE FIRST PAYMENTS FROM SOCIAL SECURITY FOR ITS CITIZENS UNDER THE NEW LAW ALLOWING THEM TO DO SO BETWEEN THEIR OWN TIME AND AFTER PUBLIC NOTICE AND TESTIMONY OF WITNESSES INCLUDING THE MAYOR OF AVONDALE
