Avondale is a small town in Arizona, located about an hour south of Phoenix. The population was 2,871 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1887 by Hiram Avondale and his wife Lucy as a farming community on the east side of the Salt River Irrigation District. After years of growth and development, Avondale became a city in 1907 when it annexed parts of nearby Paulden Township. In 1949, after years of annexation and growth by Phoenix, Avondale amalgamated with other towns in the Phoenix metropolitan area to form one large city. In 1992, whenPhoenix incorporated as a state capital under Republican rule, Avondale became its first village and continued to grow until it had reached its current size. Avondale's history can be traced back to 1887 when Hiram Avondale settled on land east of present-day Saltonstall Road on the Salt River Irrigation District he had been given by Governor Heard during California's Gold Rush period. The original settlers were Native Americans who lived near what is now downtown Mesa and called their settlement "Tonto". When gold was discovered in 1859 nearpresent-day Scottsdale, residents decided to move to AVONDALE because they could irrigate their crops there rather than transport them upriver distance where mining would take place daily. A post office was built at Tonto in 1861 but no mail ever arrived due to difficulty getting through mountain ranges between Prescott and Tucson! The first settlers organized themselves into company stores which sold goods bought from merchants along the route overland from Prescott Valley (then known as Mohave County). By 1867 there were seven companies organized into three stores which handled produce, flour, butter and bacon for local markets; all used Indian labor for their produce production although some men worked for white farmers also according to agency laws then existing at that time! On July 10th 1861 “Hiram A” Post Office opened with just six inhabitants! With this early start many businesses were formed such as: H’s store (owned & operated by Hiram A.), Wagoner’s grocery (owned & operated by Wm wagoner), Chisago meat market (owned & operated by Chisago chisagofarm), Driggs saddlery Store (operated by Jno Diggs)…and others over time including: Haverford grocery store (1868), First Mercantile Bank building (1892), Masonic Temple #2 cornerstone laid 1902 (& later renovated)…. Today only two buildings remain from original Townsite: First Mercantile Bank Building (#1) built 1902 & recently renovated[note 1]& Second Mercantile Bank Building (#2)[note 2]. All other structures have been replaced or destroyed/damaged over time….. These two buildings are still standing today providing evidence that earlyAVONDALE consisted mostly of small individual farms….Today’s AVONDALE began housing developments starting around 1960 mainly due to new construction taxes being levied upon property owners within PHXMSA [Phoenix Metropolitan Area], specifically those northwest suburbanites who wanted more space within PHXMSAigezonians had started moving out towards Tempe Marketplace since it was then becoming easier & cheaper To build homes without having acreage devoted solely TO agriculture……..Today much like yesterday services continue unchanged/available despite lack Of resident involvement nor City funding….. avondales favorite pastime still remains horseback riding even though most citizens now live outside OF town…. motto once held dear here “proudly standing strong against all odds” has long since faded away leaving behind a proud old fashioned Main Street atmosphere

Cline and his brother John founded the townsite of Clineville on the northeast edge of present-day Avondale after selling their interest in Rancho San Manuel de Avondale to George Bradley for $1,000 (). In 1886, Frederick Wessels built a sawmill and gristmill on Black Butte Creek in what is now parts of central Phoenix. By 1907, avondale had reached its peak as a mining community with over 20 businesses employing more than 400 individuals (). However, problems soon emerged withavondale's water supply which led to many mills being shut down during Prohibition (). After prohibition ended in 1920 (), avondale experienced rapid growth as social drinkers began moving out of downtown Phoenix into areas such as Midtown and Westgate () while businesses continued to open along Third Street (). After World War II (), the government began encouraging suburban development around Phoenix by providing incentives for developers to build homes outside the city limits (). This led to an increase in traffic congestion aroundAVONDALE while also reducing access to some streets that had been used by locals since before Prohibition(). A new bypass was completed throughAvondale in 2006 which has helped reduce traffic congestion on First Street () but it has not resulted in a significant increase in business or housing opportunities (). In recent years there has been talk of reviving the once popular music festival known as “The Great American Folk Festival” that took place annually at nearby University Music Hall from 2003 until 2011 but no progress has been made
