The Apache Junction Massacre took place on October 12, 1885, when the Apache Expedition of Colonel Philip Sheridan clashed with a band of Apaches in the town of Apache Junction. TheApache Annex News reported that "the Indians opened fire upon them from cover and killed three officers and several men." Incidently, one of the officer's Earmuffs was shot off during this shootout.
Apache Junction is a small, unincorporated community located in the Phoenix metropolitan area. It is bordered by the city of Scottsdale on the north, east, and south sides; Commerce City on the west side; and Kingman on the northwest. The population of Apache Junction was estimated at 1,500 in 2000. The first inhabitants of Apache Junction were Pima Indians who came here to trade goods with Spanish traders. After years of negotiation, they ceded their land to Spain in 1821 in what is now known as Treaty of Sierra Madre. In 1824, Rancho de la Alhambra was granted to Francisco albuquerque for 8 leagues (approximately 3 miles) long and 2 leagues wide along present-day Interstate 10 between Camelback Mountain and Apache Junction. John Wesley Powell crossed this route when he mapped it out during his 1893–1894 exploration of Arizona for Ulysses S. Grant's new government. AZ State Route 83 followed his path all the way to Prescott before turning southeastward again through today's Navajo Nation until it reached Gallup where it turned northeast again before reaching downtown Phoenix about midway through its journey. In 1912, Southern Arizona Railway built a tunnel under Prescott Avenue from downtown Phoenix to Mesa just west of Apache Junction then routed SR 83 underneath that same street into town so people could buy goods Train passengers could see how high mountains had been fooled into thinking they were descending when actually they were ascending as part of their scenic ride around Phoenix and Tempe! The railroad closed down in 1969 but parts still remain buried underground like several tunnels used by Metro Rail now!

The Apache Junction area has a rich history dating back to the 1800s. The area was first populated by the Pima, Wright, and Cochise tribes. In 1849, the United States government awarded land to these tribes in what is now Apache Junction. The first settlers in this area were white Mormon refugees who arrived in 1851. The Mormons built a small rancho called Cache Creek on the edge of present-day Apache Junction. This rancho served as a summer home for many years for Mormons and their families. In 1863, soldiers under General John B Mortimer burned down theCache Creek Rancho and killed all of its occupants, including many Mormon women and children. This event marked the beginning of an American Civil War that lasted until 1865. In 1881, Arizona became part of Mexico and Apache Junction became part of the new state of Chihuahua. However, because Paiute people lived in this area before Mexican troops invaded it, some local Native Americans continued to call it “Apache Junction” even after Arizona became a federal territory in 1912). To keep things relatively stable during this time period, Mexican officials renamed most of Apache Junction’s businesses after Indian chiefs or other influential figures from nearby Arizonan villages (e.g., Navajo Hotel & Casino). During World War II, military personnel stationed at Fort Bliss built a airfield near Apache Junction known as "The Horseshoe" which served as an important base for fighter planes flying over southern Arizona during World War II. After the war ended, The Horseshoe was decommissioned and eventually sold to ranchers in 1974 who used it as a pastureland until it was purchased by Friends Of The Environment in 2006 and razed to make way for development plans which are now ongoing
