In 1907, the name of the town changed to Apache Junction after a cattle drive by Fortunato Aguilar discovered coal in central Arizona. The townsite became an agricultural center with a population of around 100 people in 1925. Mexican immigrants began working on local farms during the 1920s, and as a result, manyApache Journies residents were born or raised bilingual Mexicans. By 1940, only 10 percent of Apaches living in Apache Junction spoke English as their first language. During World War II, most residents worked on munitions plants near Phoenix while others fought in the war effort. In 1945, when Arizona came under federal government control following World War II, mostApache Journies residents left for economic reasons. However, a few remained until 1957 when they were transferred to Pima County pursuant to the Indian Reorganization Act of 1934.
