Apache Junction, Arizona is a city in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 3,838 at the 2010 census. Apache Junction is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area and it is the county seat of Pinal County. The city was founded in 1912 as a railroad town and became an agricultural center after completion of the Don Valley Railway in 1916. The Don Valley Railroad merged with the Western Union Railroad to form the Pan American Telegraph Company in 1923. The Pan American Telegraph Company served as a transmission center for military radio traffic during World War II. After the war, Apache Junction lost its economic importance but regained some prominence as a manufacturing center due to shipments of automobiles and parts from Mexico City. The city's history begins with railroads serving as its primary source of income until 1912 when construction started on the Don Valley Railway which connected Tucson, Phoenix and points east. After opening, this railroad helped spur growth in Apache Junction as farmers began to send their products to new markets such as Chicago and St Louis. In 1916, when Pan American Telegraph Company was formed following merger between Don Valley Railroad and Western Union Railroad, Apache Junction became its headquarters due to its strategic location near majorlines connecting North America with Europe and Asia throughout much of that era. With added access to interstate highways through nearby Glendale Heights and Surprise both coming into play during this time period (and still do), there were numerous companies establishing themselves here including Anheuser-Busch InBev (ABI) who had their corporate headquarters located here from 1978 until they left Chaparral Hills in 2006; Lockheed Martin until 2005; Dow Chemical until 2001; Intel before 1997; AOL Time Warner before 1995; Chrysler Corporation before 1984 etc.; all within one easy drive away for those wanting to be headquartered within driving distance without having to leave their home country or town). In recent years however, Apache Junction's fortunes have fluctuated somewhat based largely on two factors: 1) increased competition from neighboring cities like Chandler and Gilbert which have experienced rapid job growth since 2000 amidst suburban sprawlimation across central Arizona; 2) dwindling tax revenue resulting from changes made by then-Governor Jan Brewer via her 2007 budget bill which targeted government services such as education funding towards businesses rather than individuals/families while also cutting overall state spending across all sectors resulting in localized unemployment/a decline in real estate values & employment opportunities over time (though this appears likelyto be reversing now thatPhoenix has seen significant job growth)). The first post office at Apache Junction was established on November 1, 1887 by order of President Grover Cleveland. The name "Apache Junction" was given to the location by General George Armstrong Custer and his Seventh Cavalry Regiment as they were retreating from Fort Marion after defeating Mexican forces during the Arikara War on October 25, 1876. On July 8, 1912, Apache Junction incorporated as a town under the jurisdiction of Tucson. On January 3, 1915, it became a city under the jurisdiction of Phoenix. On December 12 of that year it reverted to its original status as a town with no municipal government and only limited economic activity until 1959 when it again became an unincorporated community within Apache County with full municipal authority. In 1979 there was discussion about annexing Apache Junction to Mesa because of its proximity to Scottsdale and Peoria but this never happened because Mesa would not back down from their annexation plans if they could get away with it.
The Apache Junction area was first populated by the Hopis in the late 1800s. The town of Apache Junction was established in 1907 when the Arizona Railway built a railroad through the area. The town grew quickly and soon became a popular tourist spot, hosting events such as rodeos and auto races. In 1948, Apache Junction was named one of the fifty U.S. cities that received inclusion in the American Planning Association's "Planning for Tomorrow" report. In 1960, Apache Junction was incorporated as a city and soon experienced rapid growth due to its role as an agricultural center and its location on Interstate 8. In 1992, when Arizona passed a law recognizing Native American land within Arizona, Apache Junction became part of Navajo Nation territory.
