In 1898, the Apache Junction school board voted to name the new high school Apache Junction. The name was later changed to Arizona State University in 1912. In 1938, after World War II ended, the university moved to its current location adjacent to the airport. Apache Junction is a small town in the Gila River Valley of southern Arizona, United States. It is located on the border of Apache and Bernalillo counties. The population was 5,387 at the 2010 census. Apache Junction was named after General Antonio José de Apaches, who fought in the Mexican-American War. The first settlers in Apache Junction were men from New Mexico who arrived in 1881. In 1902, a group of men led by Jens Jensen set up a homesteading and trading post at what is now Apache Junction. The post served as a supply stop for travelers on their way to Payson and Globe City in Cochise County. By 1907, the post had been renamed Apache Junction after General Antonio José de Apaches and it became an important trade center for the area. In 1912, John Wesley Powell explored the Gila River Valley and came across Apache Junction while he was exploring southcentral Arizona. He named this location "Apache Junction" because of its strategic location between two mountain ranges: The Santa Catalina Mountains to the south and San Pedro Mountains to the north. As a result of this naming choice,Apache junction played an important role during World War I when military supplies were transported along the Gila River Valley route between Phoenix and Tucson
