Apache Junction is a town in Cochise County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The townsite was patented on December 12, 1887 by George W. Hinkle and James M. Sitton. Apache Junction took its name from the Apache people who were active there at the time of its founding. The post office was established in 1888 and remained in operation until it closed on September 14, 1916. In 1890 two lumber companies combined to form the Prescott Lumber Company and began construction of a sawmill along creek called "Hiawatha." Named after then-President James Buchanan Hiawatha (1811–1892), this mill became one of Prescott's most important economic engines and helped to develop Prescott as an agricultural center during the late 19th century. Prescott had been organized as a town on February 17, 1912 when it annexed part of what is now Mohave County; Apache Junction followed suit on July 11 that same year. In 1914 Apache Junction became one of fourteen towns within the newly created city of Phoenix; however, only three years later Phoenix annexed all but Apache Junction which opted to remain unincorporated within Phoenix limits until 1940 when it joined with Tempe to form Mesa.[1] It wasn't until 1990 that both towns formed their own government with Mayor Johnnie Wehner elected as mayor and Judy Daugherty serving as City Councilwoman[2]. In 2000 both governments merged into one with Mayor Wehner becoming Town Manager[3]. On January 1st 2006 Navajo Nation leaders announced they would create an Indian Reservation adjacent to Apache Junction encompassing all or portions of eleven small counties east-northeast of Grand Canyon National Park including Maricopa County—the largest county east-northeast currently without an Indian reservation—making it clear that such incorporation would be opposed by many residents in Apache Junction who see themselves as integral parts of their community for generations yet to come[4]. Today much remains unchanged from those early days including cultural tourism attractions like Thunderbird Casino Resort & Spa located just outside town limits near Monument Valley which opened its doors in 2003 Navajo Nation officials said will help support up to 2,000 jobs over 10 years[5]; ranching/agriculture continues to be key industries while some developers are eyeing up potential redevelopment opportunities around downtown where several high end condos are being leased out
