Mayor Jane Goodall served from 1975 until her retirement in 2000; during her time, she helped promote downtown redevelopment and increased funding for public education within the city limits. In 2002, then-Mayor Goodall announced that she would retire effective immediately and chosen successor Donny Johnson began term on January 1st 2003 but died suddenly about one month into office
