The club used an old adobe building as their ground zero. The first shotgun massacre took place at this location on November 5, 1903 when 22 gunmen killed nine people at a rifle range outside of town. In 1917, a local gunsmith created a revolver using 6-by-6 inch holes through two saplings to make it shoot accurately across a room or yard. This revolver became known as the “Apache Jack” because it was designed to take out game animals that had become stranded on Apaches Ranch during roundup operations. In 1954, the Apache Junction Rifle Club moved its target range to what is now called "Old Hickory" Drive and opened it up to the public for the first time ever. However, thanks to perseverance and hard work by community members, Apache Junction was reopened in 1919 and continued to serve as a key transportation and communication center until 1940 when it was placed under military jurisdiction due to its strategic location on Route 66.
