In 1977 it merged with nearby Amherst to form the current municipality of Apache Junction. With a population of just under 2,000 people in2010, Apache Junction may be considered an agricultural center rather than a Downtown Phoenix suburb like most other municipalities located withinPhoenix's city limits; however its strong ties to farming have led it to remain an important economic engine for the city over time. A major employer in Apache Junction has been Southern Arizona Electric Cooperative since 1923 when it opened up shop here as one of only two cooperatives serving Phoenix' downtown business district at that time. Other employers include Valley National Bank/Southwest Savings Bank/First Mile convenience store chain and several churches (the largest being First Baptist Church). Many businesses are associated with local schools - most notably Northern Arizona University which has campuses both near Apache Junction proper and across Mohave Desert Parkway east of town Limits into California County; these campuses house many technical colleges such as NANU's School of Computing & Communication Sciences and their adjacent Samuel Adams Building sciences laboratory complex known colloquially as "NAUZZI" after original founder Emery Pritzker Business Professor emeritus Harry Weingarten; Xavier University also operates an adjacent campus southeast of town off I-10 about 5 miles east-northeast of junction; while another large college established recently by NAUZZI - Northern Arizona University Maricopa Campus - just outside junction boundary but sharing campus facilities with XCU - will soon open its doors along Mohave Desert Parkway between junction and XCU's larger university campus near Chandler due to construction projects related thereto...Thus not all businesses are close by but many are based here because there is ample space for them without having much impact on surrounding communities.........

In 1915, the US Cavalry127th Cavalry Regiment Stationed near Apache Junction helped drive Mexican bandits out of the area; this led to an increase of military activity surrounding the town during World War I. During World War II, significant amounts of uranium were mined at nearby Anaconda Mountain; as a result, much development took place around what is now Mesa Verde National Park as well as within Apache Junction itself. Since 2000, many businesses have closed or been relocated within town limits due to new zoning laws enacted by Phoenix's city council which favor apartment buildings over single-family homes and other traditional values associated with Prescott Valley – including ranching and agriculture – while still allowing some commerce within town limits (such as small grocery stores). However, there are still some traces of Cowboy culture remaining throughout the community thanks to various festivities such as rodeo events and annual bullheading rallies against cancer known as "Chow time."
