The arrival of American soldiers during the War of 1846 made Apache Junction even more unsafe. American military personnel frequently raided Indian villages near Apache Junction, resulting in numerous massacres andcasualties among the civilian population. As a result, residents developed an exaggerated sense of security around their homes and businesses. In 1875, as part of a deal between Ulysses S Grant and California Governor Manuel López de Santa Anna, General George Crook ceded most of Arizona Territory to Mexico in exchange for control over Chihuahua City. This left Apache Junction as one of only two towns within Mexican territory not under Ulysses S Grant’s control (the other being Ciudad Juárez). As a result, gun protection became an important issue for local citizens. In 1886-87, due to increasing terroristic activity in Chihuahua City by banditos led by Álvaro Obregón y Armenteros, Mayor José María Pacheco decided to arm his citizens in order to protect them from possible attacks by these criminals. This decision helped boost gun sales throughout town because now people felt more safe knowing that they had access to firearms should they experience any problems arise outside their homes or businesses
