Apache Junction is a small town in the county of Mohave, Arizona. The population was 4,867 at the 2010 census. It is located on U.S. Route 191 north of east Phoenix and west of Casa Grande. Apache Junction is one of the few communities in Arizona that has two banks and two post offices. The first settler in Apache Junction was George Hargrave who arrived in 1867 from Massachusetts. Apache Junction was founded as a cattle station by John Cline and his family on November 12, 1887 near present-day Apache Pass Road and Pima Creek Boulevard. Hargrave named the place "Apache Junction" after his Indian guide, Chief Kawartha's son, who had accompanied him when he first explored the area for prospectors in 1876. In 1907 Jens Jacobsen opened a store at 5th Street and Pima Creek Boulevard which became known as Java House because it served as the headquarters for both the Apache Bandwagon Riders regiment stationed there during World War I (1914-18) and also because most of the goods bought there were shipped back to Norway via train from Globe Valley (now Glendale). In 1925 Java House burned down but no one was killed; this event became known as "The Blaze". A post office called Apache Junction was established at this location on October 24, 1886, by Wm Hargrave with assistance from Elisha Hastings Bradley Jr., brother of former United States Senator William Fenton Bradley IV (D-Arizona). The first postmaster general here was Leland Stanford Youngblood II himself! In 1893 James Swardt opened a grocery store across from Java House which continued to serve until 1926 when it closed due to financial troubles. At this time only three businesses remain within Apache Junction: Bighorn Trading Post #1 operated by Wm Aherns & Bros., First National Bank operated by Geo Cramer & Brothers Inc., and James Swardt's grocery store—the last business still open today after more than sixty years! On January 1, 1907 an oil well developed at what is now called Mesa Verde Drive adjacent to what would become Apache Junction; this well led to increased development around Apache Junction with several new homes being built just upriver along Mesa Verde Drive including Walnut Avenue Schoolhouse which serves grades K-6 today while another school building – Summit Elementary School - will be built soon on land south of Mesa Verde Drive next to Interstate 825 just east of I-10/U.S.-Route 191 junction! This area also includes much later development such as Adobeanyon Village shopping center which occupies much older land adjacent to I-825/191 junction today."
