In 1907, Winton Cone started operating a gristmill near Apache Junction for flour production for local farmers. The mill continued to be operated until it closed in 1951 when World War II led to an increase in demand for flour from soldiers stationed abroad. However, since then no mills have been operational within Apache Junction; instead, many residents have relied on agriculture as their main source of income. The post office at Apache Junction opened on November 20, 1912 under name "Phoenix". On January 10, 1915, it changed its name to "Apache Junction" after Apaches who had fought with General Tom Wayte during Mexican–American War campaigns against American forces occupying Mexico City. This post office served as an important link between remote rural areas east of Phoenix and Phoenix metropolitan area until 1969 when Phoenix Post Office moved into new building south of I-10 just north of Old Town Scottsdale
