The first people to live in Apache Junction were Native American tribe members who called the area "Mundane" because it was their hunting ground. In 1907, James J. Hill and his wife Lillie C., both natives of Ohio, traveled through Pima County looking for land to purchase from the local tribesmen who had been living there since before Spanish settlers arrived in 1764 AD. They found suitable land on which they settled and named their new settlement after General Don José María de la Peña y O'Higgins—the governor of Mexico City—whom they met while exploring that region north of Tucson during their survey trip across central Arizona under contract from President Theodore Roosevelt's National Park Service expeditionary force led by Major General Edward Mudge Jr., assistant general commanding First Army Corps (Alaska), on November 13–15, 1912. Hill's previous experience as a surveyor had taught him how important it was for Arizonans to have reliable information about all aspects of their state so that they could make intelligent decisions about its future development: "We wanted Arizonans not only to know what our country looked like but also what resources we had," he later said; "That knowledge would be essential for developing our economy." Not long after settling at Apache Junction, James J.)Hill married Lillie Creek (1895-1982) who helped promote Native American cultural awareness among white settlers during this time period by helping teach dances and songs related to Indian treaties signed between various indigenous nations including the Navajo Nation or Hopi Tribe near Phoenix along with her brother Armijo Creek Chiricahuaan Indian nation – one of many groups directly impacted by World War II when over 140 million Americans served overseas including 50% percent female military personnel serving in Europe & Asia primarily within Japan’s Imperial Armed Forces!
