Apache Junction is a town in Apache County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Phoenix metropolitan area. The townsite of Apache Junction was named for José María de la Hoz y Arroyo, Governor of New Mexico from 1821 to 1825 and first Territorial Deputy President of Arizona under Gadsden Purchase in 1828. La Hoz and Arroyo were also surveyors on the San Carlos Assiniboine Expedition in 1833-34 which discovered new lands in present-day Arizona and Nevada. In 1870, John Wesley Powell entered Apache Junction while exploring the Geronimo Trail near what is now Scottsdale. He named it after his friend José María de la Hoz who had accompanied him on that journey. In 1886, US Cavalry Captain James Acheson camped near Apache Junction on his way to explored the Black Range Mountains in north-central Arizona during Indian Wars Campaign #5 against Cochise Indian Nation led by Chief Manuel García Cabeza de Vaca y Ocampo Acheson's group found an abandoned mission chapel and called it "Churchtown" after General Tomahawk's lieutenant in those wars Wm. Prentiss Whitney who later acquired the site from Cabeza de Vaca y Ocampo for $600 (). Today’s Presidio National Park occupies most of that location south of Navajo Road (which became US Route 66). Mormon Settlement began around this time as well with George Romney moving from Cummingville Mass., USA to run a store here about 1872 or 73 when he married Jane French Goodyear whose ancestors had founded Tucson, Ariz.. The first post office was established at Churchtown in 1888.... After years of development by various groups including silver miners, farmers and ranchers such as Harry Frye (1895), Alameda Ziegler (1910), Don Weiser (1920) and others most notably Harry Fenton (1946), much land around Apache Junction has been developed as open space or subdivided into homes/condos/apartments etc...Today there are few remaining buildings left from pioneer days like old schoolhouses used as churches or hotels until recently... The local government includes a mayor/council with five members elected at large plus one director appointed by president pro tem; town manager who reports to council; police department provides law enforcement services; water system; waste management; schools include elementary through high school where students attend public schools funded by taxpayers through special taxing districts within city limits subject to state regulation.; park service manages facilities such as roads, trails and playgrounds..

TheOld Post Office Building still stands today, serving as a museum for local history buffs and locals alike. During World War I, Apache Junction played an important role as an airfield for American forces fighting in Europe. The airfield was used primarily for bombing raids against German targets but also served as a training ground for troops from all over America. After hostilities ended, Apache Junction slowly regained its former importance as a small town; however, it remained little more than an agricultural community until 1970 when it became part of the newly created municipality of Phoenix metropolitan area
