Apache Junction is a city in Pima County, Arizona, United States. The population was 9,569 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Pima County. Apache Junction was founded in 1881 as a small town called "Havasu" on the banks of the San Pedro River. The Navajos bought Havasu and established it as their new homeland on July 26, 1881. On December 6, 1882, Apache Chief Cochise's forces attacked and destroyed a detachment of US Cavalry near Apache Junction while they were attempting to arrest Cochise's father-in-law, Álvaro de la Hoz. This attack helped start the Navajo War which lasted for years and ultimately led to Chiricahua Canyon becoming part of Mexico. In 1896, Apache Junction became part of the newly created Pima County when it was split from Mohave County. In 1906, about 50 residents of Havasu abandoned their homes in order to escape during an outbreak of bubonic plague that swept through southern Arizona. More than 1,000 people died from the disease before it was finally eliminated by 1915. The town had declined greatly by then but development revived it with new businesses such as hotels and grocery stores opening up in response to increased tourism throughout central Arizona following World War II growth in defense industries across the Phoenix metropolitan area. With increasing competition from other rural towns in central Arizona such as Flagstaff and Winslow during this time period (and also due to advances in transportation), Prescott replaced Havasu as the local center for commerce and government during the early 21st century until Apaches Junction reclaimed its position as county seat approximately 15 years later after significant growth within both municipalities; most notably within Prescott itself via Interstate 10 eastward expansion that paralleled existing railroad lines positioned just outside town limits along I-10’s eastern border - making Prescott better situated both politically and economically to compete against newer communities seeking economic opportunities nearby along I-10 corridor

The history of Apache Junction begins with the arrival of Northern Arapaho individuals in 1885. These brave men were motivated to come to Arizona because they believed that this territory would be available for them because it had been given away to them by President James Kippenberger after Mexico's defeat at Buena Vista Heights in 1848. At that time, Mexico had annexed much of what is nowArizona Territory into their country and land grants were not given out easily or often; thus these men felt confident that they could succeed in finding land here despite their lack of experience or qualifications relative to most others involved in this process. They arrived at what is now Apache Junction on July 24th, 1885 and named their new settlement "Northern Arapaho." Because there were no towns or villages within miles of where they located their campground (the only access point being from nearby Fort Huachuca), many residents came from surrounding communities including Douglas City (now Mesa) and Window Rock (now Page). This small community soon grew large enough thatitate several stores along Main Street including Wagon Wheel Hardware & Mercantile Co., Bootstrap Cafe (later known as Home Depot), Girdle & Thread Store, Bazaar Grocery store, Mrs.[?], Famine Iron Workshops & Clothing Emporium - all operated independently until 1905 when they all joined forces under the name "Phoenix Mines" which lasted until 1912 when incorporated into Globe Telephone Companympire
