In the 1970s, the city government tried to rebrand itself as an artsy enclave but failed miserably; even artNs didn't save it from bankruptcy again in the 1980s But by 1990, there were still some vestiges of civilization left in downtown Apache Junction (and much of Southern Arizona) when Timothy Leary set out on his "trip down Memory Lane" with LSD while living at 5th Avenue South & Sahuaro Road during what became known as "The Day The Earth Stood Still." It wasn't until about 2000 that anything resembling progress took place - AZ State Highway 60W bypassed downtown completely due to development pressure elsewhere - leaving only warehouses for housing developments along Sahuaro Road outside of town proper What followed have been harshly criticized as one more examples of how Tucson's economic decline has led not onlytoMormon exodus from Mogadishu but also increasing subdivision into inner-city neighborhoods devoidof basic services such as libraries or schools - all while tax dollars continue being diverted away from essential public goods like transportation without any semblance of accountability
