The first people to live in Apache Junction were the Hualapai tribe. They built their villages near what is now Apache Junction in 1875. In 1903, a group of Mormon pioneers from Utah founded Mill Creek Colony just south of Apache Junction on the edge of present-day Mesa Verde National Park with land they had acquired from local Native American tribes. The Mormons named their new community after General George Custer who was killed during the Battle of Little Bighorn in 1876 while fighting forthe US Army against Mexican forces led by General Santa Anna. In 1907, AZ State Route 95 ( later US 95) was designated through Apache Junction as part of a network linking Prescott, Tombstone and Tucson along I-10. In 1916, when PHX began to grow rapidly due to its location as an important transportation center for goods transported into Phoenix via I-10, developers bought adjacent parcels within town limits and rechristened it "Apache Junction". With growth came increased traffic and development including schools, businesses and other residential areas which continue up until today. development along I-15 has resulted in less use or occupancy than originally planned so much infrastructure has been abandoned or replaced with larger single family homes that are not accessible by public transportation or easily tourable because there are no street namesakes associated with them like most older communities did; instead all streets terminate at a large open plaza/parking lot named "I-15 Boulevard" which ultimately leads to Interstate 15 business districts such as Downtown Phoenix etc., making this " Apaches junction" quite an unusual situation today where only residents can see it's unique name while visitors have little clue what it once was
