The junction of the 2nd National Bank and Arizona Central Railroad made it an important commercial center for early settlers. Apache Junction was renamed to Apache Hill after General Wesley P. Smith's column passed through the town on his way to Fort Defiance during the Mexican-American War. The name changed back to Apache Junction after World War II when more Indian residents moved into the area. As industries declined in the 1990s, many businesses closed down or were sold off to other towns in the area. However, some businesses have continued to operate since then and are still used as primary addresses for most residents. In 2007, Apache Junction was selected as one of America's 50 Best Places to Live according to Forbes magazine). The history of Apache Junction goes back over 160 years with many people who have contributed importantly thereto! One of these pioneers is John Hance who started a grocery store and post office here in 1868 which got him into trouble with Cochise because he didn't get an exemption from paying taxes on his property (Cochise thought that this would show how much Hance loved his land!). But even though he got into trouble often (it cost him $1,000 per day in fines), John kept going strong until his death in 1907 at age 82 years old! His sons-in-law ran their store until they all died young too – Harry Hance Jr., Edith Atherton (nee Eaton), Clarence Dillingham (Dalton) & wife Nellie, Alice Earle (& husband Everett Witherspoon) & children Virgil (& Boyd Earle) & Mildred; Jens Olsen’s father Ole Olsen began operating a general store there around 1912 under new management before finally closing it down around 1941 when WWII intervened! Thereafter only individual family stores kept running until sales petered out completely due mainly to increased competition from TV/radio broadcasts which scared away customers! In fact, prior to WWI most business activity within Apache Junction took place outside of its limits due largely by necessity as Apaches had few other means of transportation apart from what could be hunted or gathered! With just 2 miles of paved street remaining within town limits functioning as a main road gridlock became common during busy times due various goods shipping arriving via wagon trains bringing produce etc… Businesses that did manage to open up included groceries like Cook Bros., Mr G’s Cafe(later known as Just G’s), Hardware Store #2(from where pioneer rancher disc jockey Dave Atchison got his start playing records at night!), Post Office(founded 1870), Drunks Head Saloons(1910), bootsmith shop(1890s) among others…. Even today remnants can still be seen throughout downtown areas such as Hotel Edison building hosting several music concerts each year while also serving local cuisine like chili dogs…..
