Wasilla is a town located in the Borough of Wasilla, on the Copper River in southeastern Alaska. The population was 1,898 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Anchorage metropolitan area and is included within the Census Bureau's Alaska Native Village Statistical Area. The first recorded mention of Wasilla is from 1607 when Russian explorers discovered it while passing through what is now western Russia on their way to find an entrance to Siberia. In 1867, Knut Hamsun, a Norwegian traveler and explorer, traveled through Wasilla and named it after his home island Hvitanden (now part of Norway). In 1898, two businessmen from Sitka bought land east of Isakson Valley for $10 per acre and started farming sheep, cattle, potatoes and wheat. They named their farm "Wasilla" after nearby Wasilla Island which they had seen from a ship during their voyage downriver. In 1906- 1907, construction began on what would become known asthe Alaska Highway which connected Anchorage with Fairbanks via Wasilla. This highway would later be renamed the Interstate 80 corridor
The first white men to set foot in Wasilla, Alaska were the Russians in 1787. The area was uninhabited when Captain James Cook discovered it in 1797. The first settlement on the island was made by the Russian Fur trader, Elisha Stevens, and his family. He named it Mikhailskoye Inlet after himself and his father-in-law, Ivan Tikhonovitch Montero. The Russian fur trade ended around 1800 because of financial difficulties. By 1821, all but a few of the original Russian settlers had gone away due to disease or war with Russia. In 1867, during the American Civil War, Confederate forces attacked an unoccupied Russian fort on Sitka Peninsula and burned it down. This event led to a large influx of Americans into Alaska because of this battle and the discovery of new land here.
