In 1959, Eskimo living in coastal villages east of Wasilla established a winter home in what would become Wasilla while they awaited resettlement under Operation Highjump which aimed to bring more than 4500 Eskimos to relocation centers near Anchorage during the early 1960s due to fears that their traditional hunting grounds might be lost if they remained behind in rural areas. The first permanent residents arrived in 1959 with erecting cabins called wadjectives known as pilchards or pupskin huts—the latter being later replaced by permanent homes with running water and electricity connections after concerns about power lines running through sensitive Native subsistence resources into neighboring communities such as Sitka (population 15,000) created protests that led to arrests and even violence over rights to use those resources
The Wasilla Eskimo village was founded in 1875 byguide and trader, John A. Macdonald. The first European to visit the area was Russian Captain Mikhail Lomonosov in 1838. In 1898, the United States acquired Alaska from Russia as a part of the Treaty of Paris which ended World War I. The village developed slowly for many years due to lack of resources and infrastructure. However, after a devastating fire in 1959 destroyed most of the town, Wasilla began to experience rapid growth. Today, Wasilla is one of the fastest-growing villages in Alaska and is home to over 1000 residents.
