In 1959, the Alaska Railroad started construction of a new line from Anchorage to Wasilla. The railroad needed a high capacity storage depot for their materials and equipment. They found an opportunity to purchase a large tract of land in rural Wasilla, Alaska. The railroad built the depot on what is now known as Smith County Road 1. The depot was originally called "Alaskan Storage Depot No. 1." It had a capacity of 2 million cubic yards of freight and 24 million passengers per year. In 1969, the railroad renamed the depot "Alaskan Storage Depot No. 2" because it had reached its original size limit. In 1987, the Railroad decided to close Alaskan Storage Depot No. 2 and sell all its assets to a group of developers who planned to use it as an open-air park with hiking trails, fishing lakes,and other recreational activities. The population was 2,362 at the 2010 census. The name Wasilla derives from a Native American word meaning "place where icebreaking boats cross." The first permanent European settlers in Wasilla were Russians who arrived there in 1867 and established a trading post. In 1897, the Russian-owned company Northern Pacific Railway built a line to Valdez and became responsible for much of what is now southeastern Alaska. The railroad reached Wasilla in 1903 and developed it as an important commercial center with lumber production and shipbuilding accounting for most of the town's growth during World War II. In 1951, construction began on Anchorage Municipal Airport which replaced one of Northern Pacific's two small airports. By 1957,Wasilla had become one of Anchorage's largest communities with over 20 thousand residents. After World War II ended, many businesses closed or moved out; however new ones such as Sawtooth Indian School and Nakusp Credit Union opened up in their place. By 1970 Wasilla had shrunk back to its original size but continued to grow rapidly due to job opportunities available in nearby municipalities such as Anchorage and Fairbanks. As recently as 2000,was still considered one of Anchorage's fastest-growing areas with median household income surpassing $80,000 per year according to Census data In recent years there has been significant development taking place around town including: The Town Council adopted Resolution No 8-2001 calling for bidirectional streetlights along Main Street between US Highway 1 & 3rd Avenue The town also request that city services be relocated from Seward Park Drive (just past Ketchikan Casino) into Isanti Place near grocery stores

The Wasilla Eskimo community was first settled in the area now known as Wasilla, Alaska, in 1867. In 1912, a group of businessmen from Seattle organized a company to prospect for oil and gas in the region. They named their new company Western Arctic Oil Company, Inc.
