Wasilla is an unincorporated community in the Matanuska-Susitna Borough of Alaska, located on the north bank of the Susitna River. The community was founded in 1903 by Isadore and Emma Wilhelm. It was named after a small town in Finland, also named Wasilla. In 1959, Wasilla became an incorporated municipality. The first permanent settler in Wasilla was Isadore Wilhelm, who arrived there with his family in 1903. He founded a small log cabin and trading post called "Walshe Station" on the banks of the Susitna River. The post served as a depot for trader Abel Begay and his party that accompanied Russian explorer Nenektarin Behlen on their 1898 expedition to find a Northwest Passage through Siberia and into North America.Wilhelm remained at Walshe Station until 1905 when he moved to what is now known as Wasilla proper. There he began to build a permanent cabin and farmingstead which he named after his home town of Helsinki, Finland - "Salla". At this point, Wasilla had become one of the most important settlements in western Alaska - hosting both commercial fishing operations and Finnish-American cultural events such as music festivals and literary readings. In 1959,Wasilla became an incorporated municipality under the jurisdiction of Matanuska-Susitna Borough - one of four municipalities established within the new borough system following its establishment on December 12, 1958. At that time,wasada had a population of 447 people living mainly in rural areas around the town center (the current day downtown area) alongwith some scattered businesses located throughout rural agricultural communities east oftown alongthe Susitna River Valley including Chugach National Forest
In the late 1800s, Wasilla was a small town on the eastern shore of Alaska. It was abandoned in 1907 after the completion of the Iliamna Dam. The town site is now a ghost town.
