Gun safes have a long and varied history in Wasilla, Alaska. Gun safes have been used by residents of the town for centuries to store their firearms. The first gun safe was built in 1903 by Mrs. Ethel Kayser. The first handgun Safe was built in 1907 by Mrs. Lillian Flagg and is still in use today. The current gun safe design (produced by Moran Safes) began being developed in the early 1990s as a result of the Columbine shootings in Colorado Springs, Colorado which left 12 people dead and 20 injured. At that time, many towns were looking for ways to improve community safety following the shootings. In 1992, the Town Council created the position of Deputy Mayor who would be responsible for developing policies related to safety within our town. As part of this role, Deputy Mayor Flagg recommended that all town residents install new gun safes as a way to increase community security and protect against future crime incidents. In 1993, we became the first municipality in Alaska to install a steel gun safe with an electronic locking system inside each room of our building! Since then, we’ve become one of the most popular destinations among firearm owners from throughout Anchorage and beyond for shopping on guns & ammunition! Wasilla is a small town located in the Borough ofmiagnolia, Sitka and Prince Rupert, Alaska. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Anchorage metropolitan area and is served by Wasilla Airport. The first permanent residents of what is now Wasilla were three men from Russia who came to Barrow in 1867 as fur traders. They organized themselves into an Aboriginal Corporation and began trading with Russian settlers on Fox Island (later known as Southeast Alaska). In 1872, these Russians founded a mission at Aniak Bay where they established the first school in Sitka. In 1886, another group of Russians arrived seeking land east of Cook Strait and founded Fort William Henry on Kodiak Island. This led to competition for resources between Russian colonists and American fur Traders which led to violence. The Americans forced Russia out of Kodiak in 1898 and renamed it after their president became President James K. Polk: USS George Washington (1899-1901). In 1902, a group of men from Wasilla set off on a ship called "Anchorage" to find new land in order to populate what would become Wasilla. After five months they returned with news that they had found L’Anse aux Meadows – present day Anchorage – which they namedafter their leader, Ishmael Banks (). The next year saw the founding of the University of Alaska at Anchorage when professors Drs John Puskarik and Clarence Sheahan traveled downriver from Fairbanks to visit students near Homer. There was no educational opportunity for remote villages like Wasilla so until 1925 there was no university presence on local soil outside of Anchorage or Fairbanks proper; however during World War II most students were sent away due to wartime rationing). In 1951 Captain John Wohlwend took commandofthe US Navy Ship "Atkins" while moored at San Francisco Bay which Waters refersto as “the happiest month ever spent aboard my ship” because she finally got her first berth ashore after being strandedat sea since 1942! Wasilla is a town in the Borough of Wasilla, Alaska, United States. The population was 3,883 at the 2010 census. The name "Wassail" is an Alaskan word meaning "farewell." In 1892, George Hearn and his party of 32 men set out from Sitka on their way to Copper Harbor in Siberia with a shipment of supplies. They reached Wasilla on July 12 and camped there for two days before continuing their journey the next day. On July 15 they sighted land to the west and began disembarking their supplies. They arrived at Copper Harbor on July 22 but were not able to continue their journey because of lack of food and water. They made landfall in what is now Alaska on July 25 and named it Wasilla after George Hearn's home county, Ireland
