Wasilla is a town in the Borough of Anchorage, Alaska. The population was 7,812 as of the 2010 census. It is the most populous municipality in the borough and ranks third in population size among all municipalities in Alaska. The community first appeared on maps in 1898 when Nome Census taker John McLaughlin charted it as "Waska". According to oral history, Wasilla was founded by one man, named George Kuskokwimik, during the Klondike gold rush. As early as 1892, a post office was established at Wasilla with mail delivered by horse and dog team from Nome. According to oral history, Wasilla's first store was built on what is now Main Street. The store served both local residents and travelers alike for many years until it closed its doors for good around 1915. The only other permanent structure built in Wasilla until after World War II was the Isabella Hotel which opened in 1941 and became an important meeting place for government officials and businesspeople alike until it burned down in 1961. In 1948-9 Wadena Lake Noatak School District constructed a school at what is now intersection of Second Avenue South and Park Boulevard East; however due to funding shortages no students ever attendedthe school. The first thing that came out of World War II though was increased traffic through downtown Anchorage which caused problems with street cleaning since there were no employees to do so! A solution had to be found so that waste could be properly disposed without causing environmental damage or creating health hazards! Eventually curbside collection began operations throughout Anchorage with most businesses following suit within six months or less! A unique aspect about Wasilla are its town limits which are completely surrounded by rural countryside! This resulted from a land donation made by Mr. Harry Sibley who also donated over seventy acres (28 hectares) of land east of town including much of present day Sitka National Monument giving rise to today's agriculturaleland known as Sibley Ranch! In 1959-60 construction began on what would become known as Memorial Stadium which would house the new high school district’s football program; however due to budget shortages no players ever played there! Today this stadium still stands vacant but serves as a reminder of how important sports actually were during those early days when infrastructure simply wasn't ready yet for such large populations center like Wasilla!
