In 1925, due to World War I restrictions on shipping fuel through Russia (), fishing boats began sailing into Russian waters off Kodiak Island for catches such as codfish that could be taxed by Japan; this led to increased commercial development around Point Eriba which included road construction necessary for access. In 1954-1955 was developing Wickenheiser Airfield near present day Wasilla with Northrop Grumman Aircraft Corporation's AN/FPS-7 radar system being developed here during this time period as part of Project Signet which aimed to improve military air defence over North America

In 1909, the City Council authorized the construction of a water main and sewer system to help manage the growth and improve sanitation. The city also built a school and other public buildings. By 1912, Wasilla had become an important center for trade in the Arctic region. In 1916, Wasilla became the first municipality east of Manitoba to be incorporated as a city under Alaska law. The city continued to grow until World War II when it lost much of its importance due to military activity in the area.
