On July 1st of that year, the town's Fire Department became its own department with five officers being hired full time from that date forward including one lieutenant who served as interim fire chief while another officer resigned his commission to become mayoralty candidate instead On January 1st of 1938, gun dealers were allowed by ordinance to offer sales of firearms without a license or permit at their establishments which also included ammo stores which had been operating without government permits since 1936

In 1855 Russian fur trader Dmitry Mendeleev discovered a land route to Valdez which opened up trade with Siberia so settlement began there instead In 1861 Alexander Radford became governor of Alaska Territory and ordered Governor Mendeleev to open up all available stores for settlers including food supplies for those living on Kodiak Island where Fort Hope was built to house these colonists A group of men under Captain Jens Christiansen sailed from Valdez on a hunting party led by Radford to gather supplies for this new colony They reached Kodiak Island but due to bad weather decided not to proceed any further Captain Christiansen went back home with supplies that he had gathered and returned safely to Valdez This event marked the beginning of organized white settlement in present day Wasilla
