Wasilla is a small town located in the Borough of Unalaska, Alaska. The population was 553 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Bethel Census Area. The name Wasilla was chosen by Captain John Franklin as his location for his 1792-1805 trading post on Kodiak Island, due to its abundance of wild fur seals and other animals. The first permanent European settler in Wasilla was Mikhail Prymyshkin, an Russian trader who arrived in 1819. In 1827, Finnish traders founded a small village called Kiviakoski near what is now Wasilla. From 1829 until 1855, the United States government leased land at Kniktokkullik River for development into Fort Yukon; however, no human settlement developed there because of difficult terrain and lack of water resources. In 1906, President Theodore Roosevelt established Fort Yukon as a military base to support operations against Japan during World War I; however, it closed after only three months because no native residents were found living near the fortification. After the war ended,Fort Yukon became an agricultural research station run by US Army Corps of Engineers; however, it also closed in 1924 because of economic limitations caused by the Great Depression. In 1941–1945 Japanese forces attacked and destroyed most of metropolitan Anchorage including Fort Yukon; however, most residents managed to escape before that happened. After World War II ended and American troops vacated Alaska’s largest city (Anchorage), many people moved into Wasilla which had been abandoned by American settlers as a result of their relocation policies from rural areas across America during World War II onwards.
