Wasilla is a town in Wasilla County, Alaska, United States. The population was 4,715 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Wasilla County. The first European explorers to visit the area were Russian traders in 1827 and 1828. In 1864, Captain George Vancouver explored what would later become Wasilla and named it after Fundy Island in Nova Scotia. The name was changed back to Fundy in 1870 when the islands were sold to the U.S for $5 million dollars by Canadian politician Sir John A. Macdonald as part of his triangular land sales plan known as "The Great White Hope". In 1898, a group of about 30 men from Prince Rupert's Arctic Expedition set up camp on Unalaska Island near present-day Wrangell Village before continuing their journey southward across Anadarko Bay to find an open water route to Asia through Siberia and down through Japan into China. The party eventually returned home with supplies and equipment but left behind two boats filled with men who would continue exploring the region until 1911 when they opened up what is now Anchorage National Wildlife Refuge
On April 14, 1959, Wasilla became the capital of the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act (ANCSA) region.
