It is part of the Anchorage, AK metropolitan area. The earliest known inhabitants of what is now Wasilla were Eskimos who lived there for over 2,000 years before they were driven out by Russian fur traders in 1806. The first white man to visit Wasilla was Captain John Dallaire, who landed here on July 3, 1799 during his expedition led by John Ross into unknown territory north of Siberia.Captain Dallaire's discovery marked the beginning of British exploration and settlement in this region and helped lay the foundation for what would become Alaska. In 1867, Congress passed an act creating the U.S.–Alaska Territory which included parts of present-day Wasilla as well as neighboring Unalakleet Island for government control and development purposes. Though originally referred to as "Alaska," this area would be largely developed by Russia until it ceded sovereignty over Alaska to America in 1959 following World War II when Article V of the United States Constitution vested all land within limits prescribed by Congress with certain limited federal responsibilities including public education, transportation, irrigation and land management A post office was established at Wasilla in 1898 In 1907 a school building (now old High School) was erected on Unalakleet Island In 1916 a store was built at Sitka along with a telephone line In 1925 two churches were built - one near downtown Isakson and one at Kivalina In 1944 a hospital was established at Kodiak In 1949 an airstrip/ landing field became available for use by private air carriers Incorporated in 1951 A library was established In 1955 On December 7th, 1959 President Eisenhower announced that he had ordered Secretary Rusk to transfer from American military control jurisdiction over Alaskan areas including Kodiak to the CIA under Operation Neptune's Spear Withdrawing all American forces from Korea prior to their withdrawal from South Korea completely On January 6th 1960 Marine Corps Base Camp Anaconda became operational At Sitka High School students began taking flying lessons from instructor Major Donald Stevenson Some interesting facts about our history include: - On July 3rd 1899 Captain John Dallaire discovered what is now known as Wasilla while exploring North Dakota Territory; - After captain Dallaire's discovery Congressional authorization arrived via Act on December 7th 1860 establishing US Territorial borders around present day Anchorage AK; - Russian sovereignty over Alaskan regions ceded effective date October 15th 1959 following World War II pursuant Treaty signed between America & Russia; - 1945 Hospital facility established at Kodiak becoming world’s only dedicated skeletal tissue bank operated by USCG offshore];- 1970s saw significant growth period due to oil spills resultant from Santa Anna spillage which injured then killed many people along Gulf Coast region;- 1990s – 2000s have been characterized by increasing tourism activity due to growing awareness & interest around local culture & history
