In 1892, Russian explorers discovered and named Kotzebue Sound after their captain Aleksey Kotzebue who had explored that area earlier that year with his Russian vessel In 1898, gold was discovered in nearby Talkeetna Valley and led to increased traffic through Talkeetna Sound which resulted in more buildings being erected along the shoreline around Kotzebue Sound including at present-day WasillaVillage. The first store opened in 1899 at what is now known as Old Fort Glennonette on North Port Road just south of present day Butchart Bayou

Wasilla is a town in the U.S. state of Alaska, located on the Copper River about 120 miles (190 km) east of Anchorage. The population was 9,752 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1898 byLOGAN COUNTY resident John Cavanaugh as Pemaquid Landing and has been continuously inhabited since then by Native Americans and Russian fur traders. The first white people to arrive were traders from Russia, who called it "Pemaquid" because they had found a small body of water with this name near what is now Wasilla. In 1821, Russian fur trader ALEXANDER GRAVES discovered gold buried in the sand at Pemaquid Landing; this led to increased interest in land around Wasilla and its potential for gold mining.Early European settlement began when Fenton Merrill arrived at Pemaquid Landing in 1824 with his horse team, seeking to build a claim on what would become known as Merrill Land. Merrill's men successfully prospected for ore there until 1830 when he sold his land back to the Russians for $5,000 cash plus horses and equipment. By 1840, over 60 claimants had claimed land around Pemaquid Landing; some 7 miles (11 km) upriver from where Merrill had landed his party of five men two years earlier. A group of Englishmen led by Major John Smith journeyed downriver from Nome on May 20,,1841., striking gold near present-day Valdez while exploring northeast Alaska's Gold Rush period . They named their find after George Washington Mackenzie (), an Englishman who had explored Northwestern Canada during that time..Merrill developed a successful business exporting goods from Pemaquid landing until 1848 when he lost all his money in gambling ventures abroad..In 1849 Mackenzie organized an expedition with HMS Erebus and HMS Terror to hunt for gold on Anaktuvuk Pass but only found nuggets rather than gold coins which led him to believe that allusion was not accidental (). In 1850 he again set out searching for treasure but this time failed again (). He abandoned shipwrecked crew ashore at Kuparuk Bay before finally recovering them three years later..On October 22,,1855,.Russian Dissolution Act provided legal protection against British encroachment into Siberia so Mackenzie decided to make another attempt finding treasure off Kunashir Peninsula instead (). On January 14th,,1857,.Mackinez reached Kunashir Peninsula where he unsuccessfully attemptedto drill for mineral riches.( Mckenzie made other unsuccessful drilling attempts over next few years.) On July 3rd,, 1860,,,,Fenton Merrill arrived at Kodiak Island following westering winds which allowed him safe passage through uncharted territory south of Point Barrow Strait; becoming one of first white men ever documented sightseeing along North America's Continental Divide system .) For four months prior to his arrival Merrill patrolled sound under false pretenses looking for any signof life or human activity Signal Hill () may have been used as early Hot Springs/Spas by local natives). Following discovery of 250 acres (160 ha) rich copper deposits underlying neighboring communities such as Kodiak Lighthouse (), Gold Rush fever gripped much northwestern Alaskan country including Kodiak Island where profits generated by new mines quickly generated significant wealth.} In 1861 Fenton Merrill married Anna Maria Church () ; they moved into their own house built onshore soon thereafter.;AnnaMaria Church became involved with Second Great Awakening religious fervor sweeping much northwest Alaskan country during this era resulting in many conversions especially among native Alaskan women.;She also ran her own home-based school which eventually became Kings Harbor School.:AnnaMariaChurch died September 8th , 1916 aged 88years old.) Mrs Church bequeathred her estate directly unto Kings Harbor Academy Trustees Incorporated hereby creating what is now Wasilla High School whereby students attend classes year round} Aboriginal People The indigenous people of Wasilla are the Athabascans who hunter-gatherers living within spitting distance of today’s town center dating back thousands of years according To oral history collected primarily by Anna Maria Church: “Our fathers were hunters before we came here – we hunted everything that lived anywhere there was game! We killed buffalo, caribou, deer…. All kinds Of things!
