After World War II ended with Japan's surrender, locals returned to their homes as part ofOperation Overlord which saw much destruction across Asia but no significant loss or damage to Anchorage or other areas within 10 miles (16 kilometers). The post-war boom period began with construction on Interstate 95 starting in 1949 which helped spur development downtown while also creating new jobs outside the downtown core where retail businesses flourished such as bookstores and clothing stores that continue up until today.
