In the early 1800s, Fairbanks was a small town on the shores of Lake Pelee. The town grew as a result of its location and its access to hunting and fishing areas. In 1892, the city of Fairbanks was founded by Ida Nunn. The city was Named in honor of General John Fetterman, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later became governor of Alaska. Today, Fairbanks is an important cultural center in Alaska with a rich history dating back to before man even arrived in this area. The first humans to arrive in what is now Fairbanks were Eskimos. They established encampments along the banks of the Chena River around 1200 BC. Eventually, other groups began moving into what is now Fairbanks from all over Siberia and northeastern Canada. By 1700 AD, people had settled here permanently and started trading with Native Americans for goods such as meat and furs. The fur trade played an important role in the development ofFairbanks as a town. Over time, different businesses catering to this trade emerged including paper mills, sawmills, lighthouses, hotels/motels and stores serving locals and visitors alike. The economy changed significantly when oil exploration began occurring in Alaska during World War I! With profits from oil production flowing into cities like Anchorage and Seattle respectively, Fairbanks quickly became known as one of America’s leading petroleum towns! During World War II, Fairbanks played an important role within United States military efforts throughout North America! More than 4200 men from various backgrounds worked at local factories building munitions for American troops fighting overseas! In 1945, President Truman designatedFairbanks home to both Headquarters for Combined Chiefs Operations (HQCOM)and Control Tower #2 which monitored American strategic bombing operations over Japan!
In 1867, the first white person ever to set foot in Fairbanks was Captain John D. Roebling, who founded the Roebling Company, a fur trading business. In 1897, Russian settlers arrived in what is now Fairbanks and began to build a small town called Nome on the bank of the discoveries made by Dr. John Deegan in 1896-97. The town was abandoned in 1909 when gold was discovered at Nome. A year later, a government survey showed that an area of 4 square miles (11 km2) had been found suitable for settlement and named Fort Yukon after Sir George Hunter Commandant at Mackenzie River Station.
