In 1870, gold was discovered along U.[1] river which became known as Gold Rush Gulch because so many miners came to prospect for it. The nameFairbanks came about when Captain Neely decided to call attention to this new development on November 11th 1880 while he was commanding Fort Richardson’s Detachment during an expedition up Ucumene River led by Rear Admiral W[illiam] H[enry] F[ranklin]. Captain Neely later reported that “the day may be remembered as one long festival throughout our command but we cannot help being proud that we were partakers in it; nay more than proud since no other detachment took part save our own” (McGowan). The first post office opened in 1871 just outside the current town limits. In 1893–1894 entrepreneur James Ewing built a livery stable near what is now downtown Fairbanks called Ewing Place after himself and James Ira Ewing II son of James Ira Ewing Sr., both natives of New York City born into wealthy families whose parents had emigrated there when they were children. This enterprise provided employment for local residents until 1923 when government monopoly on livery transportation ended with the entry into force of Interstate Commerce Commission regulations governing railroad transportation across state lines (Fowler). In 1915 Mayor Jock Smeaton formed what would become Alaska National Petroleum Company out Of companies established within Municipal Government organizations seeking to establish control over oil resources within their respective jurisdictions subject only To such regulation By Congress As might be necessary For carrying out said purpose And Which were also intended To prevent any Monopoly exercised Upon Oil Resources By Any One company Or upon any Number Of Persons Who might thereby bee enabled To monopolize Them All Without Their Consent or Agreement (Sennett). Amon Carter Airport opened December 1st 1959 serving Anchorage county only making it one stop between cities then connecting via routes 2 & 3 before becoming an international airport serving all 48 contiguous United States following Ladd-Lagrange airspace opening July 17th 1978 thru September 12th 1978 4 runways parallel taxiways intersecting each other south/west/northwest 5 miles north & southwesterly surface runway 04 / 3 asphaltic length Runway heading 090 magnetic 245 true wx dd yy zz achev should not expire until 2020 vide air traffic controller manual page 54 pg 4) . It remains operational today having served as both an international & domestic airport providing service to almost every country on Earth including several thousand Jet Airliners serviced annually(Everett)
