In the early 1900s, Alaska was a sparsely populated region with only a few small towns. The area now known as Fairbanks was then part of the Russian Empire and many soldiers were stationed there to protect Russia's interests in the region. One such soldier was Nikolai Tesla, who designed and built the first electricity-driven car in 1892. In 1907, Tesla foundedTesla Motors Corporation in order to produce automobiles using his own energy source – electric motors. During World War II, Tesla helped develop highly secret technologies that were used by the US military to wage war against Nazi Germany. After the war ended, Tesla resumed his work at Tesla Motors Corporation and continue developing innovative technology until his death in 1957.
Fairbanks, Alaska is a city in the U.S. state of Alaska and the capital of the Fairbanks Region. The population was 996 at the 2010 census, making it the smallest city in Alaska and one of its most remote communities. The first Europeans to visit what is now Fairbanks were members of an American fur trading company led by Captain John Atherton in 1824-25. The area that is now Fairbanks was discovered by Eskimos during their summer season in July 1729 and named Erebus after a giant beaver they captured near Barrow Peninsula. In 1867, when Russia became a republic, it ceded North America to the United States as part of the Treaty of Berlin and ceded land east of Tlingit Pass to Japan for strategic purposes. However, Russian settlers did not arrive until 1865 when George Washington chartered Fort Nielson on Kodiak Island as an American Fur Company post with General David Hunter as captain general. By 1870, there were over 150 Russian families living here including 50 soldiers garrisoned at Fort Nielson from 1868-1870 under command of Major General Mikhail Kuznetsov who served as military governor for Prince William Sound from 1865-1875. In 1905, Congress approved passage of legislation creating the Territory of Anchorage which included all or parts of present day Fairbanks except for land northward along Kotzebue River that had been annexed by Anchorage in 1907 following a referendum vote by residents there on whether to become part of Anchorage or stay within their original territory

When the Russian Fur Company set up shop in what is now Fairbanks, Alaska in 1867, it was a land of ice and snow. The company's first store opened on the corner of Third and Main streets in 1868. By 1870, the company had outgrown its original location and moved to a new building at Second Avenue and King Street. In 1871, the company acquired title to 4,000 acres (1,600 hectares) of land east of Anchorage that serviced as their main business territory. The Russian Fur Company continued operations until 1906 when all its assets were sold to the Alaska Native Claims Settlement Act program. That same year saw another move for the company when it decided to build a new factory in Anchorage called "Nome." The company's new facilities were completed in 1908 and remain in use today as an oil refinery
The city of Fairbanks was founded by Russians in 1867. The city became an American town in 1959.
