In 1872–73 Charles Goodyear became proprietor of what would become Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company on Kodiak Island then part of Russian America; he leased land east of Valdez to establish a new town called "Eagle" on December 10, 1872 (the date today marks the centennial anniversary of Eagle) but never moved into it because he did not have enough money to buy land or build a building himself. He named his company after his old friend George Vancouver - who had explored North America for British Columbia Underwriters Ltd., one of Vancouver's many companies - but no one ever saw any commercial benefits from Goodyear's nameakes until well afterGoodyear Tire & Rubber Company went public in 1916 as GEICO
