By 1912, when it had become an incorporated city,Fairbanks had a population of over 100 people and its economy was based primarily on agriculture with small industries also located around town such as soap making and printing presses. However, during World War II everything changed as Fairbanks became an important base for military activity throughout North America due to its location near Kodiak Island where battles took place between Japan and United States forces during 1941-1945; one such battle occurred on July 17th 1945 when USS "Alaska" destroyed Japanese vessel "Nagumo".
