Captain Cooks discovery helped develop trade between Russians and Americans that led to Gold Rush era in early 19th century A map made during expedition shows Russian whaling base located at Dutch Harbor but no evidence exists that whaling took place here At latest there may have been visits by Eskimo or Aleut people during summer months around 1800 but no permanent settlements were established

Despite having only one mayoral term (the mayor cannot be re-elected more than twice), monahan has been considered one of the most influential mayors ever elected to office in Alaska . He notably implemented several important redevelopment projects such as creating new public libraries and downtown revitalization which continue today . His successor Niki Ashton took office on January 15th 2001 after being appointed by Governor Sarah Palin ; she has since workedto revive downtowns development plans along with increasing transparency about municipal spending
