He named it Fort Shipbuilding after shipbuilding pioneer Nicholasthy Arkhipov who had died two years earlier while exploring Siberia for America's Western Pacific Railroad company. In 1872-73, American Captain John Atherton established an Eskimo trading post at Anadarko Bay about 3 miles (5 km) southeast of present day Anchorage with help from local Native Americans under Chief Nuktokwimat (?–1899). By 1875, Russian traders had established a whaling station at Sitka with supplies coming down the Inside Passage through nearby Kodiak Island
